Presented at the ABLS Consortium Meeting · April 2026

Mousa Shaya, Shaya Software and Systems LLC · In collaboration with Dr. Frank Bungartz, Arizona State University

This presentation documents a two-year data engineering initiative (2024–2026) to systematically improve the taxonomic quality of the Symbiota Lichen Portal. Working in close collaboration with Dr. Frank Bungartz (ASU), whose scientific direction and domain authority guided every stage of the work, the project reconciled six authoritative fungal name databases against the portal’s 132,501 existing taxa — resulting in measurable improvements to completeness, accuracy, and scientific integrity.
